Packers-Bears Film Room: t half in the Green Bay Packers’ Sunday tilt against the Chicago Bears.Bulaga spent the entire game going up against Khalil Mack http://www.authenticsgreenbaypackers.com/cheap-nick-perry-jersey , Leonard Floyd, and Aaron Lynch. In limited snaps, Mack was credited with a forced fumble, a sack, and an interception that was returned for a touchdown in addition to several other pressures, but all of his production came in the first half.Mack probably should have had another sack, too, but DeShone Kizer narrowly escaped.Let’s look at the latter play. Bulaga puts his hands on Mack first and Mack excellently counters by swiping Bulaga’s hands down.It wasn’t all bad early on; on occasion, the Packers mitigated the possible damage coming from the right side by having their tight ends chip on defenders and using quicker passes. And, when asked, Bulaga showed he was able to contain Mack. The two plays that, when looking at the box score, made Khalil Mack look like a world beaterwere the strip sack and the interception for a touchdown.Let’s take a closer look at the strip sack.Davante Adams and Randall Cobb are lined up closely to Bulaga’s right side.McCarthy gives Bulaga help by having Adams chip against Mack, which slows him down considerably.By the time Mack even gets to Bulaga, who is waiting for him, Kizer has taken his drop and pump faked to nobody.Kizer’s eyes are up as there’s no pass rush, and Geronimo Allison was schemed open perfectly.Cobb runs a curl route who’s sole purpose is to hang up Allison’s defender while he runs a drag route over the middle.Adams runs a funky little corner-post route to get the middle linebacker’s attention and make him sag deep, leaving literally nobody near Allison.Kizer instead hesitated Youth JK Scott Jersey , which allowed linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski to sort of come back to Allison (he was still wide open).Once he decided that his initial read wasn’t there anymore (it still was) Kizer bails on the pocket and tries to roll right, going directly into the path of Mack. And another angle:While it looked bad on the scoresheet, you can’t pin this one on Bulaga. The other high impact play of the first half isn’t something you can pin directly on Bulaga either. The play itself was designed as a middle screen to Montgomery, who was lined up next to Kizer in the shotgun. Each tackle will pass block like any other traditional play, the guards and center take a quick pass set and let their guy through, and the running back tucks in right behind them. All of that was executed well. This looks like a successful play:The only thing wrong was that Mack took too long to get into his pass rush, saw Montgomery out of the corner of his eye, and peeled off Bulaga’s block. We all know the rest. And the alternate angle:This play put Green Bay down 17-0 with a few seconds left of the second half, and the Packers looked like they didn’t belong on the same field.Things picked up in the second half. The Bears’ defense was held without a sack for the rest of the game, and nobody from Bulaga’s side even came close.A few things contributed to that; the first is that Bulaga himself settled down. The second contributor to better protection, as fellow Acme Packing Company writer Paul Noonan pointed out on Tuesday, was scheming. An injured Aaron Rodgers meant Mike McCarthy was (hopefully) going to protect his quarterback, and he did this mainly through faster timed throws. Can’t get sacked if the ball isn’t in your hand...besides, quick throws are the staple of the West Coast offense, something that McCarthy and staff have gotten away from in the past few years.Let me digress here a little bit.Mack has a tendency to take a minute to get into his typical pass rush move.He likes to take his first step outside, feign going inside by taking a jab step inside and shaking his shoulders - this makes the blocker have to slow his feet in order to not give up the inside - then he either dips his shoulders and goes outside, or bull rushes. The key here as a blocker is to not over commit to the inside; it’s a dangerous proposition, because if he gets an easy inside release it’s the fastest way to the quarterback. The thinking goes Color Rush Kenny Clark Jersey , if the defender beats you outside, at least it takes them a few more steps to get there, giving your QB an extra half second.Take a look at Mack’s move:This, combined with the quickened pace of the routes, meant the pressure was off of a hobbling Rodgers in the second half.Whether it was third and one;Or first and ten;The ball was coming out quickly, and the offense was moving down the field with ease.Rodgers finished with 286 yards with a 66.7% completion percentage and three touchdowns.More importantly, he finished the game upright and with a win.A strained MCL will limit Rodgers’ mobility in the upcoming weeks, so the offense will hopefully see an uptick in the number of quicker passes.Let’s just hope that Bulaga and the rest of the offensive line can settle into their own rhythm quicker than they did against the Bears. As I was looking through Football Outsiders’ numbers today to get ready for Sunday’s game between the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots, a few things caught my eye. Most significant is the fact that the two teams are separated by just one spot in the DVOA rankings for the season to this point. That difference got me looking deeper to see what differences are present and whether they can explain why the Packers sit at .500 after seven games while the Patriots are 6-2. In short, New England has been a better team overall this year, but the Pats certainly aren’t better by enough that one would expect them to finish 250 points higher in winning percentage over a full season than the Packers. Here’s what I found for the two teams.Packers’ offense vs. Patriots’ defenseGreen Bay’s offense ranks sixth in the NFL in DVOA at +13.4%, while the Patriots’ defense is 16th at -0.6%. There should be room to move the ball through the air despite the Packers’ 13th-place passing offense, as the Patriots rank 19th in that area.Expect Davante Adams in particular to have another big game this week. The Patriots rank 26th against opposing #1 receivers. They are also near the bottom in covering running backs, sitting 25th, which suggests a good day for Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams in the passing game as well. Green Bay would do well to call the occasional screen pass or try to get Jones on some wheel routes out of the backfield. However, the Pats are very good against other receivers, ranking 11th against #2s, 4th against all “other” wide receivers http://www.authenticsgreenbaypackers.com/cheap-davante-adams-jersey , and 7th against tight ends. Look for the Packers to attack Jason McCourty and Jonathan Jones on the left side of the Pats’ defense in particular as well, as New England ranks 28th on passes to the left (the offense’s right) but in the top five on passes in the middle and to the right. In the run game, the Patriots rank 9th, while the Packers’ rushing attack ranks fourth on this per-attempt metric. Running behind right tackle Bryan Bulaga may be a mistake, as the Pats rank first in the league on runs off right tackle (where left defensive end Trey Flowers usually lines up). They’re below-average everywhere else, however. That’s probably fine for the Packers, though, who rarely ever run that direction (only 5.3% of attempts this year have been charted as right tackle runs).Patriots’ offense vs. Packers’ defenseThe Patriots’ offense is almost a reverse of the Packers’, as New England ranks fourth in passing offense and 14th in rushing. Meanwhile, Green Bay ranks 17th and 24th, respectively on defense.Like the Pats, the Packers are iffy against #1s, with a 25th-place ranking. However, they’re also 20th against #2 wideouts while coming in just above league-average against all other players in coverage. Of course, keeping tabs on running back James White is a challenge for anyone; as a result, the Packers will almost certainly see more than the 5.4 attempts per game that their opponents average to running backs, which is the lowest mark in the NFL.In the run game, look for New England to run between the tackles a great deal Color Rush Jamaal Williams Jersey , as their line ranks second in DVOA when doing so. It may be a surprise to see that the Packers’ front sits 30th against runs up the middle, given the talent on the defensive line.OVERALLIn summation, the Packers are 11th in total DVOA, one spot behind the tenth-place Patriots. That’s great on its face, and it suggests that the teams are pretty closely matched. However, the numbers also indicate that there are tiers in place, with teams ranked 6-10 being a step ahead of those from 11-14, which are in turn lumped pretty closely together). The difference between the Patriots and the 6th-place Seahawks is closer (2.3%) than the difference between them and the Packers (3.6%), while Green Bay is closer to 14th-place Miami (2.4%) than to New England.(Also notable is that half of the difference between the two teams is a result of the Packers’ inferior performance on special teams this season.)Those tiers could help explain why one team is 6-2 and the other is 3-3-1, especially since there does not appear to be a large difference in the teams’ schedule strengths, though the Packers have played a slightly tougher schedule. Still, Football Outsiders’ projections for the remainder of the season show the Packers going .567 the rest of the way and the Pats being a .613 team (based on future opponents). Projecting those winning percentages over a full 16-game schedule would result in just one win of separation between the two. All told, this game very well could and should be a close contest.
